Monitoring Networks with Cricket

In my capacity as a system administrator, I like using cricket by Jeff Allen to monitor trends. Trend analysis, unfortunately, is often implemented separately from incident response, which is often handled in a system like nagios. Cricket is based on Tobias Oetiker's rich RRDTool for storing and graphically presenting trend data.

In the course of troubleshooting performance problems in production web application systems, I've found need to dig much deeper into various software systems. Few people seem to take good advantage of the SNMP interfaces offered by enterprise-class software. Here is glue I've put together for monitoring some systems.

I've found I actually enjoy doing this sort of work. If you have an unsupported device or server (I've been eying Sun's SNMP MIB for iPlanet), consider contacting me to do custom development work.
