PerlMenu was an idea I had a long time ago for a directory browsing tool that was realized in internal FVWM menus.

You can download PerlMenu here.

Apparently, there's a perl module called PerlMenu. That would be my mistake, for using the same name, but the damage is done now. Anyway, the text interface module for perl can be found here.

History

After working on this for a while, I came up with something that sort of worked, but was kludgey. My perl was weak, my patience short, and I fundamentally believed that certain aspects of FVWM's menuing system made what I really wanted to do impossible.

So I gave my project up. Then, someone came along and hacked some pretty serious improvements into FVWM's menuing code. What I'd been trying to do became explicitly possible. But I wasn't so keen on perl anymore, and generally couldn't be bothered to give things another try.

At last, I decided to try this again, came up with what you see here, and promptly discovered that someone else had finished the work and that a script called fvwm-menu-directory was being distributed with the latest FVWM betas that does exactly what PerlMenu was supposed to do. So all in all, you should use fvwm-menu-directory.

There are some features that are implicit in my design that I think fvwm-menu-directory might profit from, but I can merge those features into fvwm-menu-directory. Anyway, that's the story.
